W&W BIOGRAPHY

Quote of Armin van Buuren early 2010:“W&W are truly the rising stars of trance. If I have to put my money on somebody, I put it on W&W.”

Introduction:

What started as a chance meeting at the 2007 Trance Energy has, in just under 4 years, solidified into one of the freshest, most exciting electronic dance acts on the scene. With it has come a new multifarious trance sound that, globally, has begun to shatter underground clubs, arenas and festivals. Banding together under the name W&W has seen the collective careers of Ward van der Harst & Willem van Hanegem go into overdrive… As spinners they’ve delivered due damage to club nights and festivals and in both 2010 and 2011, their A-list-hammered track portfolio saw them conclusively tip the ‘next big thing’ scales. Now, in the new decade, W&W are ready to rule.

Ready for ‘Impact’

2011 sees the guys embark upon a new adventure. In September, the debut album of W&W will be released on Armada Music. ‘Impact’ has all the essential W&W sounds to blow you away and take you in at the same time. Including some very exciting collabs, but never losing the essential W&W strength, ‘Impact’ is set to rule speakers and headphones alike.

W&W Productions:

The serendipitous Trance Energy meet quickly bore their debut W&W production, which came in the form of the mighty ‘Mustang’. ‘Arena’  followed up its freshman success and fast found the CDJs of luminaries like Armin van Buuren,  Tiësto, Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz, Sander Van Doorn & Judge Jules. Tipped by Armin van Buuren as “the best up-and-coming production duo out there”, W&W have continued to rock federation trance to its core with ‘Mainstage’, the Sean Tyas-remixed ‘D.N.A’ each bringing floors to critical mass. Followed by singles ‘Manhattan’, ‘Impact’, ‘AK-47’ and the very first vocal anthem ‘Three O’Clock’ featuring Ana Criado, W&W is in excellent shape for debut album ‘Impact’. Remix-side, their voracious rewires have proved equally as popular – most notably on Armin’s ‘Rain’ and those of, Aly & Fila, Allure, Marcel Woods & others.

DJs:

Almost a year to the day since Willem & Ward first shook hands they quickly took up the spinning mantle. That route has taken them to some of the most respected nights out there. Ones that have come to include Poland’s Sunrise Festival & Entrance, Trance Energy, Tomorrowland, the A State Of Trance 450 and 500 gigs, Several Global Gatherings, Nature One and clubs like Ministry Of Sound London, The Guvernment Toronto & Amnesia Ibiza to name a few.

The Mainstage Radio Show:

Now a regular standing fixture in the trance enthusiasts listening schedule, W&W’s Mainstage radio show exports their diverse sound around the world every week. Mainstage is all about showcasing the freshest music and exposing new talent to the world. Broadcasting weekly on Sirius XM, Kiss FM (Ukraine), Dance Paradise Radio (Brazil) and bi-weekly on the renowned Afterhours FM.  In and amongst the intriguing Mainstage ID feature, where every week they’ll be playing a track so hot-damn fresh-off-the-desk, it can’t even be named, you’ll also now be able to vote in… Most Wanted! Through the fan forum you’ll be able to pick you favorite track of the fortnight and vote on it. The winner will be duly crowned ‘Most Wanted’ on the following show. Mainstage is also available as podcast and can be downloaded on iTunes or be heard/downloaded over here:  http://podcast.wandwmusic.nl/

Solarstone: Pure – The New Artist Album

solarstone pure album

His third studio album, ‘Pure‘ heralds the frontline return for DJ, producer, singer and songwriter, Solarstone (aka Richard Mowatt). A 13-track collection of new music, it features musical co-productions with artists like Aly & Fila and Giuseppe Ottaviani and vocal team-ups with singers including Betsie Larkin, Clare Stagg, Billy McGruddy and Hannah Magenta.

With the trance genre dividing and sub-dividing, rather than follow the fragmentation pack, in 2010 Solarstone diverted to record his concept album ‘Touchstone‘. Now, two years on, he’s back with a new long-player and a new manifesto.

“I recorded this album as a reaction to all the riven division that’s crept into trance over the last 3 years. It’s a kickback against nonsense genre terminologies and a fight-back against the self-appointed style councils that try to tell us what music’s cool and what the latest must-like is. Against tracks that have such a mish-mash of sound styles that even their producers don’t know what they are making. This album is both a purification and celebration of the term TRANCE. I’m reclaiming it, for all those who just want to dance to music that takes them to another place, for whom this music is a feeling, a passion, a way of life. So I say: Vive La Trance! You need to be proud of what makes you feel good… To all of you who know your own minds, this album contains PURE trance – embrace it!” – Richard Mowatt, Solarstone – April 2012

Providing the perfect launch point for ‘Pure‘, from its first propulsive beat to the opening sweep of its atomic synths, the title track of Solarstone’s new LP instantly addresses the big rooms. Clarifying that vision further, the celestially gazing “Voyager” masses its booming drums to pulsate the speakers for a heart-in-mouth outer space ride.

With the Billy McGruddy-vocalled “Shake The Demons“, Richard re-establishes one of the most talked-about connections from his ‘Touchstone‘ album. Following the club hits “Electric Love” and “Is There Anyone Out There“, the pair’s latest co-production extends a different tone. Catching the mood of McGruddy’s hazy, higher-than-the-sun vocals, Solarstone directs them to the floor, backed by mesmeric synths and killer 303 churn.

Pure Trance’ is a feeling, a passion which exists outside of contemporary musical fads and fashions. It is the bringing together of millions of fans for whom this music is a way of life.

Amongst its vocalists, ‘Pure‘ debuts a very special new talent. Over the course of the album’s runtime, Clare Stagg’s folk-tinged delivery makes three stunning appearances. On current single “The Spell“, she brings absorbing lyrics, which balance aching lament with an un-crushable spirit of optimism. Don’t be fooled though… with its running bass, bleep-fuelled entrancing lead line and speaker baiting drums, behind “The Spell’s” immersive vocal splendour beats the hypersonic heart of a floor dominator.

Touchstone was recorded with at least one ear on the at-home listen. ‘Pure’ though is constructed predominantly for the club.

Those on the hunt for the album’s “Seven Cities“/”4Ever“/”Touchstone” moment won’t need to look any further than “Fireisland“. Co-produced with Egypt’s Aly & Fila, from the opening throb of its bass guitar and shimmering med-head melodies, it works in Spanish guitar flecks and sun-kissed synths. On “Falcons” meanwhile, Solarstone is sharing studio space with Italy’s Giuseppe Ottaviani, with the pair conjuring a seismic, uprush-ing number. With its calling female harmonies, breath-stealing synths and high-end horsepower production, “Falcons” is pure trance served by the shot glass. Back in solo mode, on “Please“, Solarstone doesn’t back off the throttle for a second, creating a floor flamer that features the spoken vocal musings of a certain well-known 60s rock poet.

Where the drums drop out of the album, ‘Pure‘ begins to move in more introspective directions. Backed by his sparse breakbeats and live strings, on “Where Do We Go From HereRichard duets with Betsie Larkin, for a raw, real and emotive vocal two-hander. Set against the mellow drama of chilled, beat-free ambience, “Swansong” – the album’s fittingly titled closing track – sees Hannah Magenta’s heavenly choral refrain cut deep.

Solo, with vocalists old and new, and alongside heavyweight production collaborators, ‘Pure‘ is album title and mission statement rolled into one. Taking its producer back to his grass-roots, in the process he has distilled its sound. This is pure trance and ‘PureSolarstone.
